The situation

Where Door County Child Development Center started

The Door County Child Development Center (DCCDC) moved into a new, larger building to meet the county's demand for childcare and to add Head Start and Early Head Start programs.

A new building is the one chance to get every system right from the start: who can open which door, cameras that cover every corner, Wi-Fi everywhere children and staff go, and phones in every classroom. DCCDC was already a Quantum client at its old location, and we planned it with Keller, the firm managing the construction.

Six months of planning before the first cable

We met with DCCDC's leadership for more than six months to understand how each space would be used, then engineered, reviewed and adjusted every system on paper. That gave the center an accurate budget and meant installation went smoothly.

Safety first

The building security system controls 18 doors with key fobs and records 35 cameras covering the interior and exterior. Only parents, guardians and approved staff get in, rooms for different age groups stay separate, and doors are set up to stop a young child from wandering out unsupervised.

Everything else the building runs on

Each classroom has an iPad tied to the parent communication app, which also lets a teacher adjust the lights at nap time without getting up.

  • Network: more than 125 Cat6 drops, firewall, switches and 14 wireless access points, with Wi-Fi out to the playground.
  • Phones: 25 phones for offices and classrooms, with paging and announcements.
  • AV: a full conference room for board and staff meetings, a multipurpose room with wireless microphones, and a mobile SMART Board with video conferencing.
  • Ongoing managed IT support, including the move from the old building to the new one.
