Do We Need Microsoft 365 Business Premium?
If you carry cyber insurance, handle customer, financial or health data, or plan to turn on Copilot, almost certainly yes. Here is what Business Premium adds over Business Standard and when Standard is still enough.

Short answer: if your business carries cyber insurance, handles customer, financial or health information, or plans to turn on Microsoft 365 Copilot, you almost certainly need Business Premium. Business Standard is enough only for a small team with simple needs whose security is fully covered by separate tools.
What Business Premium adds
Business Standard gives you email, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and the desktop Office apps. Business Premium includes all of that and adds the security and management layer most insurers and auditors now ask about:
- Intune device management: set up, secure, update and wipe company laptops and phones from one place.
- Microsoft Defender for Business: endpoint detection and response on every computer, the control insurers ask about most after multi-factor authentication.
- Entra ID P1 and conditional access: require multi-factor sign-in, block logins from other countries, and allow access only from company devices.
- Defender for Office 365: checks links and attachments in email before anyone clicks them.
- Purview information protection: sensitivity labels and data loss prevention, so documents marked confidential stay that way.
- Email archiving, so mail can be kept for compliance without filling mailboxes.
Why it matters more now
Two things changed. Cyber-insurance applications now ask directly about endpoint detection, conditional access and multi-factor authentication, and Business Premium covers all three in one license. And Copilot: before it can be switched on safely, files need the right permissions and sensitive documents need labels, which is a Business Premium feature.
What it costs
Business Premium costs more per user per month than Business Standard, and the gap is usually less than what a business would pay for separate endpoint protection and device management tools. Check current list prices with Microsoft or your provider, since they change. Most companies do not need it for every account: shared mailboxes and a few light users can stay on cheaper plans.
When Business Standard is enough
- You have only a handful of users, no regulated data, and no cyber-insurance requirements.
- Your managed IT provider already supplies endpoint detection and device management through other tools, and you are happy with that.
- You have no plans to use Copilot.
What we recommend
For most of the 10- to 100-person businesses we support across Door County, Green Bay and the Fox Valley, Business Premium is the right baseline, and we set it up with conditional access, device enrollment and labels turned on, not just licensed. If you are unsure which plan you are on or what is actually configured, we can review your Microsoft 365 tenant and tell you in plain terms.
